Unexploded grenade found in Dunebuggy Flats

On Saturday, November 5, 2011 the Imperial County Arson and Bomb Unit was dispatched to detonate an unexploded 40 millimeter grenade found by a camper in the Dunebuggy Flats camping area of the ISDRA. Dunebuggy Flats is also known as Gordons Well.

Even though the Imperial County Arson and Bomb Unit successfully destroyed the grenade, the camper that discovered it made one crucial and potentially deadly mistake. HE MOVED IT! Please, if you ever come across any strange object that is thought to be a UXO, don't disturb it and report it to 911 immediately. Experts also advise that you move at least 100 feet away from a potential UXO before using any cell phones or radios.

I hope that you never come across any UXO, but don't forget that the ISDRA was part of the training ground for General George S. Patton and his troops during WWII. Where do you think Patton's Valley got it's name? None the less, if you do happen to stumble upon UXO, here is some general guidance that will help you with the rules of engagement.

Recognize, Retreat, Report!

  • If you see UXO, STOP, do not move closer.
  • Do NOT transmit radio frequencies near UXO (cell phones, two-way radios, CB radios. Keep at least 100 ft. away).
  • NEVER touch, move, or disturb UXO.
  • NEVER remove anything near UXO.
  • Call 911 and report UXO. Move 100 ft. away before using cell phone or radio.
  • Avoid any area where UXO is located.

The full BLM article can be found here.

Dune smart, and be safe out there duners!

It's Halloween weekend, the official start of this years desert season and with an estimated 73000 visitors expected, it's also one of the biggest desert camping weekends of the year. Large holiday weekends like Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Years, and Presidents always draw a large crowd so safe duning needs to be stressed more than ever. Keep your speed down around other campsites and please don't drink and ride. Remember, it's our behavior as responsible duners that will help preserve this great sport for all of the future generations to come.

Press Release: Royal Purple

Last week I was sent a press release from Royal Purple so I thought I'd share it with your all. For all of you Royal Purple users, I'd love to hear what you think about the product.

Easy Maintenance Tips To Finish The Season Strong

June 10, 2011 (Porter, TX) - The summer is quickly coming to a close and you're ready to squeeze that last little bit of performance out of your vehicle. Preventing breakage and wear is more important than ever, so you can finish the season strong and not let the season finish you. While you may be thinking maintenance takes tons of time and a certain level of mechanical expertise, with tips from Royal Purple, it's easier and faster than you expect.

Protect Your Cables
In the tough, dirty environment where you play, it is crucial to maintain your cables to keep them from getting hung up or binding up, a situation that could result in major issues. With just a few squirts of Royal Purple's Maxfilm, it's taken care of. Maxfilm is a multipurpose, synthetic lubricant that deeply penetrates leaving an exceptionally tough and durable lubricating film for improved operation and long lasting protection against wear, rust and corrosion.

Extend The Life Of Your Chain
Everyone has experienced that frustrating moment when your chain begins to slip and you start losing power, or even worse, it comes off completely causing a catastrophic failure. Replacing chains is not only annoying, sometimes they can be hard to find while on the road. An easy and cost-effective step you can take to preserve your chain drive is to keep it lubricated with a high performance synthetic lubricant like Max-Chain.

Max-Chain can dramatically reduce wear and extend equipment life. It provides excellent protection against rust and corrosion for chains, open gears and exposed metal surfaces that are subject to severe loading. It works equally well in wet, acidic and dusty environments. Max-Chain can be applied by either spraying or brushing. Once applied, the carrier evaporates leaving a long-lasting, dry, wax-like film. This non-tacky film effectively minimizes the collection of abrasive dust and other airborne contaminants. Max-Chain can lubricate at up to 400°F once the carrying solvent has evaporated.

Keep It Cool
Whether you're on the trail or racing across the dunes, your engine is going to get hot. Help your vehicle's engine fight the heat by adding a radiator coolant additive like Purple Ice. Purple Ice reduces engine heat by reducing surface tension of the radiator fluids for improved heat transfer all while preventing the formation of scale deposits in the radiator and lubricating the water pump seals. Learn more about keeping your cool at http://www.coolerradiators.com/

Life In The Desert

If you stop and look closely, you'll notice the deserts are coming to life as winter wraps up and spring prepares to make its 2011 appearance.

For those of you that are interested in viewing the colorful wildflowers as they start to blossom, decorating the sandy washes and barren rocky hillsides of Anza Borrego State Park, it's time to start paying close attention to the wildflower reports.

I'm interested. Which wildflower reports should I follow?

The absolute best wildflower reports that I have discovered online are those from DesertUSA.com. They not only follow the current wildflower conditions, but they also supply good information as to the best possible viewing areas, which will save you both time and money as you explore the desert valleys. DesertUSA.com also includes not only reports for Anza Borrego State Park, but also many other popular locations such as Death Valley, Joshua Tree Nation Park, and many others.

While you should be able to obtain maps and other relevant printed wildflower information from your local desert nature center or park headquarters, if you have a smart phone, you can also try the online wildflower field guide from DesertUSA.com.

If you enjoy the wildflowers and would like to see more, you may also consider checking out the poppy reserve in Antelope Valley, CA. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve offers up 8 miles of trials that lead through rolling hills that are covered with brightly colored poppies. There is also an annual poppy festival in April for those that are interested.

Whatever you decide, make sure to watch the reports closely, get your camera batteries charged up, and get out there and experience the beauty of our deserts during spring.

14th Annual Sand Dunes Cleanup

Mark your calendars and plan your weekend, as the 14th annual Sand Dunes Cleanup is scheduled for January 15, 2011.

14th Annual ISDRA Martin Luther King Weekend Sand Dunes Cleanup

Why is the Sand Dune Cleanup so important?

The annual Sand Dunes Cleanup event is vital to all desert enthusiasts, not just off-roaders. Dune cleanup events draw volunteers out to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area and provide a fun day for the whole family, all while cleaning up the dunes and teaching our young ones about the importance of a clean environment. The sustainability of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is dependent on the ability of all dune enthusiasts to maintain a clean and safe recreation area.

That does sound important, so how can I help?

In order to participate in the 14th annual Sand Dunes Cleanup, you must register. Please arrive at one of the designated registration sites at 8:00 a.m. PST to pick up your trash bags. The first 3,000 registered volunteers will take home a free t-shirt, and each bag of trash collected will be exchanged for raffle tickets for a prize drawing that will be held at the end of the event.

South dunes registration areas include:

  • Gordon's Well (south end main staging area, near public restrooms)
  • Buttercup at Vendors Row
  • Ogilby Camp (past the tower toward the south)
  • Midway

North dunes registration areas include:

  • Glamis Flats (north end main staging area near vendor row)
  • Wash Road (Wash 4)

  • Oldsmobile Hill

Dune cleanup is from 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. PST, lunch is served between 11:30 a.m. PST - 12:30 p.m. PST, and the prize raffle will start at 12:30 p.m. until finished.

The 14th annual Dunes Cleanup is sponsored by the United Desert Gateway, Monster Energy Drink, Rally's Burgers, Unchained Studios Unlimited and the Bureau of Land Management.
For questions or more information, please e-mail Charla@uniteddesertgateway.org or call 1-760-337-4155.
